Help - Display Options

Once you've done a search or chosen a collection, you will have a few display options: list, gallery, timeline, map and for collections, info.  Some of these options may not be available for every search. For example, if all of your results are from the same year, you won't have a timeline option available.

List view

List view is the default display. The list will show you a small image of each item, tell you whether it is image, text, audio or video, and will tell you how many pages or files are part of that item.  Each result may also include a brief description, date and the name of the collection it comes from.

Gallery view

The gallery view is a good way to get a quick overview of a large set of image results. It shows a small image of each result and the item title.

Timeline view

The timeline shows an overview of the dates images were taken or text items were published. We don't have dates for everything, so this view will be a subset of items for which we know the date. Use the date-slider control to limit the date range, and click the Apply button to limit your results by date.

Map View

The map view shows your results on a map. We don't have location information for everything, so this view will be a subset of your search results. More details about how the map view works are included on the Explore by Map page.

Information View (collections only)

This option is only available when you've selected a collection from the collection list, and it may not be available for every collection.  It provides further information about the collection that was digitized, including the collection background, biographical information if the collection is about a person, and information about how much material was digitized from that collection. Very few of our collections have been digitized in their entirety, so if you find a collection useful, explore the Info page to learn more about using the rest of the collection in person.
