Help - Browse by Collection

An alternative to searching this site is to browse by collection.

What is a collection?

Each digital collection in this site matches a manuscript collection, a university archives collection or a rare book collection in the UIC Library.  You can see a list of these at the Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids site.

The UIC Library has over 600 manuscript collections and many hundreds of University Archives collections. Only a small number of these have been digitized, and in most cases, only a portion of the collection has been scanned. The Collections page provides a list of those collections with digital material.

The Collections list

From the home page you can get to the collections list from the Collections icon or the Browse all Collections link.

From any page in the site you can go to the collection list from the Collections link at the top right of the screen.

The collection list will open with a detailed description of each collection by default. The detailed list provides a brief description of each collection and an indication of how many digital objects are available from that collection.

If you just want a quick list of collection titles you can click on the Compact View button.

Filter the collection list

You can limit the collections list by general themes in the collection, by the type of collection or by the location where the collection is held. The UIC Library has collections at both Chicago libraries and at the regional locations.

View a collection

When you select a collection, you'll get a list view of all of the digital objects from that collection.  You will see any other display options for exploring the collection at the top of the list. These may include the gallery, information, timeline and map views. To learn more about these options, see the Display Options help page
