The jacket front illustration shows a boy looking out a window at a ramshackle village and an ox pulling a cart. The title page of the book is inscribed by the author, and also bears H. D. Carberry's signature. The author has autographed the book next to his portrait (opposite title page). Drawings of two men, one in front view, the other in back view, are on the front and back endpapers.

Notes
:
"The wrapper design, end-papers and portrait of the author, are by the West Indian artist Denis Williams." - p. [1]. George Lamming's first novel, a now classic novel about a young boy growing up in the Caribbean and his struggle with colonial education and authoritarianism. Already experimental in style, it marks the beginning of an on-going and distinguished career as a novelist, essayist and speaker for the Caribbean. The paperback reprint of 1960 (London: Ace Books) is also in the Carberry collection and provides sharp contrast in its cover art and, presumably, the readers it was soliciting.
