Notes

Brian Russell was the jacket designer. Winner of the BP Independence Literary Award, this novel marks Lovelace's public emergence as a major voice in Caribbean literature. Summary: A story about a man in Port of Spain, who after being constantly passed up for promotion, ponders going back to the land. The action follows the then-familiar migration of populations from rural to urban, in its focus on a rural family settled in a Port of Spain tenement. The protagonist discovers the possibility of political agency by getting involved in a murder trial. The urban scene would provide Lovelace with material for some of his richest novels, notably The Dragon Can't Dance (1979, also in the Carberry Collection) and the much later, Commonwealth Prize winning, Salt.
