Notes
:
Kenneth Farnhill was the jacket designer. Written while Lovelace was at Howard University, his second novel, The Schoolmaster, is set in the remote Trinidadian village of Kumaca, where a group of villagers respond to the encroaching metropolitan culture by deciding to establish a school. Despite a tradition-reflexive community opposition, the more progressive villagers succeed in their campaign, finally persuading the hesitant local priest, constructing a building, and appointing a schoolmaster. The novel encompasses rural-urban tensions around the building of the school and a road, exacerbated by the coming of a corrupt schoolmaster. The corruption is expunged and the characters redeemed by their sense of continuity and their capacity for endurance. This will increasingly be Lovelace's theme in the coming decades. Although it received favorable critical reception, the author's reputation was not cemented until his much-lauded third novel, The Dragon Can't Dance.
