Salim Patell was the jacket designer. The Middle Passage (1962), Naipaul's first travel book, is an account of his journey in 1950 from London to his birthplace, the Caribbean island of Trinidad. It is both a journey to the familiar and to the strange and Naipaul records it all with honesty, clear analysis and, per some critics, cruelty. (These critics point to anecdotes such as the first chapter, in which Naipaul admits his satisfaction that his cabin is separate from his uncultured and poor fellow colonials.) In addition, he journeys to British Guiana, Suriname, Martinique and Jamaica, and his narrative forms a provocative study of societies whose common heritage of colonialism and slavery is examined with unique insight.
