Promoters used the star Arcturus to ceremoniously open A Century of Progress in 1933. It was believed that the light of Arcturus took 40 years to reach the Earth, and this fact was used as a way to connect the Century of Progress with Chicago's earlier world fair in 1893.

Italo Balbo was a fascist general and leader of the Italian Blackshirts and, at the time, a close ally of Benito Mussolini. Balbo arrived at the Century of Progress on a transatlantic flight from Rome, Italy. The City of Chicago subsequently staged a parade and renamed 7th Street 'Balbo Drive' in his honor.
