William has held numerous positions at the federal level. He served as special counsel to President Bill Clinton to secure ratification of NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement (1993-1994), as U.S. Secretary of Commerce under President Clinton (1997-2000), and as chief of staff for President Barack Obama (2011-2012).
