The building is nine hundred feet long and ten stories in height at its center. It faces upon a five acre park fronting Lake Michigan. Albert Kahn of Detroit is the architect, and Walter Dorwin Teague of New York, the industrial designer, is in charge of the interior display.

Rufus Dawes was the brother of Charles G. Dawes, former Vice President of the United States. Charles G. Dawes was instrumental in soliciting private donations to finance the exposition and served as consultant to his brother.
