Bridges, viaducts, and underpasses: Moveable bridges of Chicago (Folder 59)
Community Activities bring the city's government into the neighborhood. Mayor Richard J. Daley's campaign for a cleaner Chicago reached out to students in Chicago's schools and made them part of the Junior Citizen's Committee for a Cleaner Chicago.
1994
Howard CTA station
View west on West Howard Street at the intersection with North Paulina Street and the CTA Howard station (now part of the Red Line). The entrance to the station is under the viaduct. De Mar's Restaurant and Pancake House is at the right.
1975
East Chicago South Shore Line Station
View looking north along Indianapolis Boulevard near the Indiana Toll Road, just south of the intersection with South Roxanna Drive. The overpass for the South Shore Line electric railroad crosses above Indianapolis Boulevard; the station house and parking for the East Chicago station is just to the right of the viaduct. The embankment for the South Shore Line is visible beyond the station on the right side of the image. A billboard for a local car dealership stands on the roof of the station house. A sign on the right side of Indianapolis Boulevard reads "Dr. John B. Nicosia, Mayor, Welcomes You To East Chicago Indiana. Please Drive Carefully!"
1972
Train overpasses, West 87th Street
View looking east along West 87th Street from just east of the intersection with South Eggleston Avenue, towards three viaducts of the Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad (C&WI railroad) line which serve as a train overpasses. In the distance, a freight train with oil cars is visible crossing the third overpass. Billboards flank both sides of the entrance to the viaduct.
