The sculpture, installed in this location in 1975, was commissioned by the B.F. Ferguson Monument Fund as a memorial to Illinois poet and historian Carl Sandburg, and inspired by Sandburg's poem of the same name. Burnham Hall is in the distance behind it, and the lower part of the Science & Engineering Offices building is at the upper right.
