Award ceremony for first African American Medal of Honor recipient of the Vietnam War
President Lyndon B. Johnson speaking outside of White House at the presentation of the Congressional Medal of Honor awarded posthumously to Private First Class Milton L. Olive, III. The Medal was awarded for Mr. Olive's actions in the Vietnam War. At the age of 18, Olive sacrificed his life to save others by smothering a live grenade. He was the first African-American Medal of Honor recipient of the Vietnam War. At left of President Johnson stand Olive's parents. Behind the President stand numerous representatives of the armed services, Mayor Richard J. Daley, and other dignitaries. Also in attendance are two of the four men whose lives were saved by Olive's actions.
