The Century of Progress showcased the artistic, cultural, and scientific achievements of Czechoslovakia, then a newly independent country that had won its independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of World War One. Anton Cermak, mayor of Chicago from 1931 until his assassination in 1933, just a few months prior to the Century of Progress grand opening, was a Czech immigrant from Bohemia.
