Chicago Urban League records

Founded in 1910, the National Urban League is one of the oldest African American social service, research, and advocacy organizations in the United States. The Chicago Urban League collection now holds over 300 images and over 130,000 pages of full text material.  It documents the history, leadership, activities, social services provided by the Chicago Urban League. The collection also contains material from affiliated organizations which directly pertain to the Chicago Urban League. 

 


Adrian Scheltes collection

The Adrian Scheltes collection contains photographs either taken by or collected by Scheltes while he was the Supervisor of Counsel and Guidance for the Blind from the Illinois Division of Vocational Rehabilitation in the late 1940s and early 1950s. After his own experience losing his sight at age 21, Scheltes wanted to be of use to the community and assisted blind people with learning professional skills to enter the workforce. Scheltes also advocated for Black blind people in his work and for eliminating discrimination of handicapped people generally. The photographs are of blind people working in a variety of jobs and learning skills.

These 8 maps were scanned from the book "Hull-House maps and papers : a presentation of nationalities and wages in a congested district of Chicago, together with comments and essays on problems growing out of the social conditions". Four of the maps show home occupancy by nationality and four show home occupancy by wage. All focus on the area surrounding the Hull-House, near Halsted and Taylor.

This set of 22 maps from the 1700s was bound together as "The Atlas Factice of Sir William Beauchamp Proctor", then later unbound. They cover locations in Europe and the Americas.

Architecture and Arts Oral History Project

This collection contains sound files and transcripts of oral history interviews conducted with former Art and Architecture faculty members. (Today known as the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts.) The collection was created by Eileen Broido, working on a celebration of the history of the College in 2007.

Lea Demarest Taylor (1883-1975) daughter of Graham Taylor, founder of the Chicago Commons settlement house, and Leah Demarest Taylor was active in Chicago's social settlement movement. The digital collection includes Chicago urban planning reports from the 1920s to the 1960s.

The Dr. Chester Danehower Collection is comprised of items related to the medical field of dermatology. The collection comprises a variety of medical artifacts and was given to the Library of the Health Sciences — Peoria in 2014 and 2015 by Dr. Chester and Mrs. George Ann Danehower. Dr. Danehower was a faculty member in the Dermatology department within the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. While the collection only has 6 objects, one includes over a hundred images. This content may not be appropriate for all audiences.

The Immigrants' Protective League was founded in 1908 as a resource for all new immigrants arriving in Chicago. The Immigrants' Protective League records contain reports, memoranda, case histories, affidavits, legislative bills, dissertations, press releases, resolutions, photographs, maps, addresses, statements, clippings, and articles.

 


Italian American Records
Italian American Collection Records

The Italian-American Collection was compiled as part of the "Italians in Chicago" project by the Department of History at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle. The project was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and interviews were largely conducted during 1979 and 1980. Donations included photographs, booklets and pamphlets, as well as various other family memorabilia.
